Shade Garden Poetry BEFORE & AFTER Views This woodland shade garden was lovely even in its "before" condition. But in collaboration with the poet–owner, subtle editing was all that was needed to polish this garden gem. Sturdy stepstone entrances were added at each end of a pathway in addition to a delightful pottery focal point. |

Mockups play an important role in the design process. Above, wood stumps are stacked to determine the desired height of the proposed pottery focal point. Removing invasive grasses permits the distinctive textures of ferns & perennials to stand out. Generously sized stone treads signal entrances. |

Existing rhododendrons & native ferns are punctuated by the addition of shade-loving understory trees, shrubs, & rescued rhododendrons. Site work began by establishing a smooth bark pathway & removing invasives (see process). |
